Claude’s GEO Crackdown: Earned Media Is the Real AI Visibility
Anthropic banned using Claude for fake GEO tactics. Prism PR CEO Rick Pendrick on why earned media is the AI visibility that lasts, and what…

To get your brand cited by Perplexity, you need two things: a website Perplexity is allowed to read, and articles about you on sites it already trusts. The first takes an afternoon. The second is a PR job, and it is where almost every brand that gets cited by Perplexity earned its spot. This guide walks through both, step by step, in plain English, for the buyer who has never hired a PR agency.
A word on why I care about this. At Prism we built our own AI tools for PR work, including media monitoring, newsjacking, and fact checking, so I spend a lot of time watching how AI systems read the news. What they reward looks a lot like what good PR has always produced.
First, a quick definition. Being cited by Perplexity is part of what people now call SEO and AEO: SEO means showing up when people search on Google, and AEO (answer engine optimization) means showing up when they ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. The same work helps with both.
Perplexity is an answer engine. You ask a question, it searches the web in real time, writes an answer, and lists numbered sources so you can check its work. That last part is what makes it different from a chatbot that answers from memory. Every answer is built from pages it found that day, so a new page does not have to wait for a model to be retrained before it can be cited by Perplexity.
Perplexity’s own documentation on its crawlers explains how it finds those pages. PerplexityBot “is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity.” A second agent, Perplexity-User, visits a page when a person asks a question, so it can “include a link to the page in its response.” Perplexity also says PerplexityBot is not used to crawl content for training AI foundation models.
So to be cited by Perplexity, a page has to be findable by its search, and it has to look like a trustworthy answer. Most of the pages that clear that bar were written by someone other than the brand. Muck Rack’s October 2026 edition of its What Is AI Reading? report, which draws on more than 40 million AI responses plus a fresh set of 1,020 prompts run across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, found that more than 84% of AI citations come from earned and third-party sources: journalism, Wikipedia and other encyclopedic sites, government sources, academic research, and third-party company content. Owned media, meaning a brand’s own website, was 15.2%.
We covered the ChatGPT side of this in How to Get Your Brand Mentioned in ChatGPT and Google’s side in How Google AI Overviews Choose Their Sources. Perplexity has its own habits, and the steps below are built around them.
Start with the X’s and O’s. If Perplexity cannot read your site, it cannot cite it.
Perplexity says plainly: “To ensure your site appears in search results, we recommend allowing PerplexityBot in your site’s robots.txt file and permitting requests from our published IP ranges.” Robots.txt is a small text file that tells crawlers which parts of your site they may visit. Ask your web developer to check two things:
While your developer is in there, make sure your home page and About page say, in simple sentences, who you are, what you sell, who you sell it to, and where you operate. Clear facts are easier for any reader to repeat.
Here is the honest limit of this step. A readable website keeps you eligible to be cited by Perplexity. It does not make Perplexity choose you. Your own site is your company talking about itself, and at 15.2% of citations in the Muck Rack data, it is the smaller share of the pie. For how the technical side fits with the rest, see our SEO, AEO, and GEO page.
This is the step that does the heavy lifting.
Profound, an AI search analytics company, studied 680 million citations from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity between August 2024 and June 2025. On Perplexity, the single most-cited site was Reddit, at 6.6% of all citations, followed by YouTube at 2.0% and Gartner at 1.0%. The rest of its top 10 were Yelp, LinkedIn, Forbes, NerdWallet, TripAdvisor, G2, and PCMag.
Two things stand out about the sites most often cited by Perplexity. First, no one site dominates. The top source is under 7% of citations, which means the other 93% or so is spread across a long list of publications, review sites, and research pages. Second, the names on that list are places where someone else judges a company: reviewers, analysts, editors, and customers. That is earned media, and it is what gets a company cited by Perplexity.
So the practical move is to find out which sites Perplexity cites for your category, then earn a place on them. Ask Perplexity the questions your buyers ask (“What is the best payroll software for a 50-person company?”) and write down every source it numbers under the answer. That list is your media target list. A story in an outlet Perplexity already trusts for your category is worth more for this goal than a dozen stories it never reads.
Earned coverage does a second job, too. When a news story links to your website, that backlink (a clickable link from a news story to your website, which lifts your Google ranking) matters to Google, which says it uses links as a signal when judging the relevance of pages. We at Prism have placed more than 25,000 stories and earned 20,000 backlinks for clients, so for us, getting cited by Perplexity and our SEO linkbuilding work are the same work.
If you want to be cited by Perplexity, you need coverage, and coverage does not come from announcements. It comes from news, and the most reliable way to make news is to publish something no one else has.
Reporters are asking for it. In Cision’s 2026 State of the Media survey of 1,899 journalists, 66% said they rely on PR for story ideas, and original research and credible data were among the things they said work.
That is why we build a newsworthy, data-driven industry study for our clients. Prism analyzes federal data, plus the client’s own data when it helps, finds the national trend, and ranks every state. The industry study runs on the client’s blog after they approve it, then we pitch national, trade, and local reporters. Our 2026 industry study campaigns average 20.8 stories a month, each carrying a backlink. Here’s a live dashboard for our client CareScout showing what we’ve secured over the last 9 months, which was a full-service campaign, including these monthly studies. Our guide on how to create an industry study walks through the process.
Here is why that matters for being cited by Perplexity. Perplexity leans on publications, review sites, and research pages. A data-driven industry study puts your company’s name inside all three: the reporter’s story, the outlets that pick it up, and the original research page they link to. For Digital Ventures’ four affiliate sites, including SafeHome.org and Security.org, a year of this work produced 1,489 editorial backlinks at an average DA of 73.9, and the portfolio was acquired by Centerfield. The Centerfield case study shows the state rankings, trend reports, and surveys behind it.
Reddit is the most-cited site on Perplexity in the Profound data, and review and community sites such as Yelp, TripAdvisor, and G2 are in its top 10 too. That suggests Perplexity values what real customers say, not only what editors publish.
Be careful here, because this is where a lot of brands get it wrong. You cannot buy your way onto Reddit. Reddit’s content policy asks people to “participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest” and not to spam or manipulate content. Fake accounts and planted praise get removed, and getting caught is its own bad story.
What works is slower and more honest:
Earned coverage and real conversation feed each other, and both raise your odds of being cited by Perplexity. A good story gets discussed, and a discussed company gets covered.
Here is a finding that should change how you measure this. In Muck Rack’s October 2026 report, when the same prompt was run twice in one day, Perplexity repeated 94% of its cited domains. ChatGPT repeated just 41% and Gemini 45%.
In plain English, Perplexity is consistent. Once you are among the sources it trusts for a question, you tend to stay there, and if you are not, you will not luck into it on a second try. That makes being cited by Perplexity a useful scoreboard for your PR.
A simple monthly check:
Run the same check on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google separately. The Muck Rack report found only 212 domains were cited by all four major AI providers, so winning on one does not mean you win on the rest. If you want to see where you stand before you start, our case studies page shows what earned coverage has done for other brands.
A lot of what is sold under the AI search label does not hold up. Three things to skip:
If someone promises to get you cited by Perplexity by a certain date, ask them how. A real answer will sound like PR: research, reporters, reviews, and coverage.
Allow PerplexityBot in your robots.txt file and firewall, make your key facts easy to read, and then earn coverage and reviews on the third-party sites Perplexity already cites for your category. In Muck Rack’s October 2026 data, more than 84% of AI citations came from earned and third-party sources.
Not inside the answers. Paid and advertorial content made up about 0.3% of AI citations in Muck Rack’s October 2026 report. What gets cited is coverage, research, and reviews someone else chose to publish.
Perplexity says PerplexityBot is used to surface and link websites in its search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
Profound’s analysis of Perplexity citations found Reddit was the most-cited single site, at 6.6% of citations. Perplexity appears to value real customer discussion. The right response is authentic participation and real reviews, not planted posts.
Perplexity searches the web live, so a new story on a trusted site can show up as a source soon after it runs. Becoming a regular source for your category takes months of steady coverage, not one launch.
No. Both write answers with sources, but they draw on different parts of the web. Muck Rack found only 212 domains were cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity alike, so check each one separately.
Perplexity cites what other people have published about you. Let its crawler in, then earn coverage, research, and real reviews on the sites it already trusts, and check the results every month. Being cited by Perplexity is an outcome of earned media, not a separate trick. If you want to know what Perplexity says about you and your competitors today, schedule an intro meeting.
