The Jay-Z Super Bowl Halftime Pick: A PR Lesson in Timing

The Jay-Z Super Bowl Halftime Pick: A PR Lesson in Timing

Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show on Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium, the NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Monday night. Because Roc Nation, the company he founded, has helped run the league’s halftime show since 2019, the Jay-Z Super Bowl halftime headline wrote itself: he picked himself.

At the end of the day, this is much ado about nothing. I disagree with the old adage that all publicity is good publicity, but in this case the “controversy” is good publicity in the lead-up to the Super Bowl. Jay-Z is an excellent choice. He is well loved. And this controversy was avoidable with a proper PR plan.

I handled communications at the NBA for 10 years and worked with Jay-Z directly, including arranging his and Beyoncé’s meeting with Prince William and Kate Middleton at a Brooklyn Nets vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game, which promoted the Royal Foundation and NBA Cares. That Dec. 8, 2014, night at Barclays Center, the royals met NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to celebrate a partnership between the Royal Foundation and the league on wildlife conservation, then sat courtside, and after the third quarter Jay-Z and Beyoncé were led across the court to meet them.

I have spent more than 20 years in corporate America and at top New York PR agencies, including in-house at the NBA and NASCAR, and here is how I read the Jay-Z Super Bowl halftime story, and what executives should take from it.

Why the Jay-Z Super Bowl Halftime Pick Makes Sense

Start with the artist. Jay-Z is one of the most celebrated artists of our generation. He has won 25 Grammy Awards, and “Reasonable Doubt” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year.

He is also back on the scene and grinding for the first time in years. This year he headlined the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, sold out anniversary shows at Yankee Stadium and played Paris, and Puck pointed to those strong ticket sales as proof he remains a major draw. His eight-part HBO series with Rick Rubin, “JAŸ-Z IN 8,” wrapped with its Oct. 9 finale.

So it makes sense that he would headline. What hurts is how the pick looks.

The Real Issue: He Appears to Have Picked Himself

Roc Nation partnered with the NFL in 2019 to advise on and help produce the league’s entertainment, including the halftime show. When the company that helps choose the act chooses its founder, it can look self-serving.

That 2019 partnership also came with baggage. It arrived while Colin Kaepernick was still out of the league after his protests, and critics hit hard. Kaepernick’s lawyer called the deal “cold-blooded,” and Jay-Z answered critics who labeled him a sellout. Many fans saw the deal as the league buying credibility instead of changing how it treated players. That history is why the “he picked himself” story has legs.

Jay-Z has spent years building a reputation as the smartest operator in the room, the artist who became the executive. That’s exactly what makes this sting. A performer who gets chosen looks like a star. An executive who chooses himself looks like he’s cashing in.

If the show is great, most of this fades by kickoff. If it’s flat, this becomes the story people remember.

The PR Lesson Is Timing: Announce It and Explain It the Same Day

The pick leaked first. Puck reported on Oct. 20 that, according to multiple sources, Jay-Z had selected himself, and the NFL and Roc Nation did not respond to its requests for comment. For a week, the leak was the story, and critics defined it first.

Roger Goodell’s explanation is exactly the right message. In his statement with the announcement, he said: “When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request: that JAŸ-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him.” But it came a week after the leak, once the backlash was already the story. It should have been the first thing anyone heard.

Here is what I would have done:

  • Hold a media roundtable the same day as the announcement. Bring in key outlets and let Goodell and NFL leadership explain that they had to talk Jay-Z into it.
  • Give the context up front. Point to his return to the stage this year, so the pick reads as the obvious moment.
  • Book a handful of interviews. Jay-Z and Goodell with the NFL’s partners, Fox, CBS, NBC and ESPN, including “First Take” and Stephen A. Smith’s podcast, plus “The Breakfast Club.”

Announce it and explain it the same day, and you control the narrative.

For executives, the Monday-morning version is simple. If your news has an obvious objection (you hired a friend, you picked your own company, you raised prices), answer it in the announcement itself. Write down the worst headline before you go public, and make sure your first statement already answers it. And if your news is at risk of leaking, have that explanation ready to go the moment it does.

Will It Hurt the Show? Ratings, Sponsors and Trust

Viewership won’t move much. People watch the Super Bowl for the game, the ads and the party, not one act. Sponsors care about controversy that lasts, not a few weeks of online noise. If anything, Jay-Z’s popularity will bring in more viewers and sponsors.

The bigger long-term risk for the league is trust. Once fans start asking how the halftime act really gets chosen, they ask it every year. The fix is transparency about the process. Tell people who is involved, what the criteria are and how a decision gets made, before anyone has to ask.

That lesson travels well beyond football. Any time you are both the referee and a player (a founder’s company winning a contract, a board picking one of its own), the process is the story. Explain it before someone else does.

The Coverage Outlasts the Controversy

One more reason to get the framing right on day one: the coverage stays online. Every story about who “picked himself” will keep showing up in search results for years, and it shapes what people find.

That matters for SEO and AEO: showing up when people search on Google, and when they ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Muck Rack analyzed more than 25 million links cited by AI tools in its May 2026 “What Is AI Reading?” report and found that about 84% of citations come from earned media (a group that includes journalism, academic and government sources, and encyclopedic sites like Wikipedia). If the first wave of stories is the backlash, that is what AI repeats.

That is the work we do at Prism. We are an award-winning, full-service PR agency, and we are also a digital PR and linkbuilding firm. We plan announcements so the story is framed on day one, and we earn the stories, with backlinks (a clickable link from a news story to your website, which lifts your Google ranking), that make a company more visible in search and AI answers. When a story does go sideways, our crisis and reputation team works the same way. You can see how we turned the NBA’s first official visit to India into global coverage in our NBA India case study.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Jay-Z involved in choosing the Super Bowl halftime show?

His company, Roc Nation, partnered with the NFL in 2019 to advise on and help produce the league’s entertainment, including the halftime show. Roc Nation will executive produce the Super Bowl LXI show, which is why critics say he picked himself.

What did Roger Goodell say about Jay-Z headlining?

In a statement with the announcement, Goodell said that when the league first reached its agreement with Roc Nation, he “had just one request: that JAŸ-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him.”

Will the Jay-Z Super Bowl halftime controversy hurt ratings?

Probably not. People watch for the game, the ads and the party. The longer-term risk is trust in how the halftime act gets chosen, which the league can fix by being open about the process.

What is the PR lesson for executives?

Announce it and explain it the same day. If your news has an obvious objection, answer it in the announcement, before critics define the story for you.

Plan the Announcement Before It Leaks

Jay-Z will likely put on a great show, and most of this will fade by kickoff. But the week between the leak and the explanation was avoidable. If you have big news coming, and an objection you can already see, let’s plan the day you announce it.
